The Monarchy
The Esara Monarchy
works in collaboration with the State Government and the Federal
Government playing complementary roles. At present no monarchy in
Nigeria has legislative powers. The various Councils of Traditional
Rulers in the states play advisory roles. In the near future, it is
contemplated that monarchs will be assigned definite roles in the new
Constitution that is being contemplated. Views to this effect are being
expressed in state and national discourses.
Traditional Rulers play complementary role with state government in the
maintenance of peace, fighting crime, and monitoring projects sited in
their kingdoms. Monarchs are paid some allowances for the upkeep of
their Palaces. Such allowances are hardly enough to meet the basic needs
of the kings and the running of the kingdom’s administrative expenses.
Most of the kings in the main depend on their own entrepreneurial
efforts.
The major goals of the king are to liaise with government, companies,
NGOs in their domains in order to attract social infrastructure,
employment opportunities, education, healthcare facilities, utilities
(water, electricity, telecommunication, etc) social amenities such as
roads, means of transportation, community development efforts. The
monarch initiates committees to mobilize the people for self-help
projects in collaboration with companies around and philanthropists. In
this regard, we also solicit the active support of International Aid
Agencies to help Oro-Esara Kingdom in the development of all-season
roads, social infrastructure, medicare and education. |
